The VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) partners with the local community to offer a wide array of special programs and initiatives designed to help homeless Veterans live as self-sufficiently and independently as possible. The Department of Veterans Affairs’ Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) programs comprise the largest integrated network of homeless treatment and assistance services in the nation. As a component of this network, VA San Diego strives to provide a continuum of service – from outreach to permanent housing.

Homeless and Housing Resources in San Diego

VA National Call Center for Homeless Veterans 24/7 Hotline
1-877-4AID-VET
www.va.gov/homeless/housing.asp

The hotline and online chat are free, and neither VA registration nor VA health care enrollment is necessary to use either service. Our trained responders, many of them Veterans, are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

When you call or join the online chat:

  • You will be connected to a trained VA responder.
  • The responder will ask a few questions to assess your needs.
  • If you’re a Veteran, you may be connected to the Homeless Program Coordinator at the nearest VA medical center.
  • Contact information will be requested so staff can follow up.

HUD-VA Supportive Housing (VASH) Program is a joint effort between the Department of Housing and Urban Development and VA. HUD allocated nearly 38,000 “Housing Choice” Section 8 vouchers across the country. These vouchers allow Veterans and their families to live in market rate rental units while VA provides case management services. A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord on behalf of the participating Veteran. The Veteran then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.
